DigitalWorld's proprietary LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology and services use GPS/Inertial navigation technology on an aerial platform. During the flight a scanning laser range finder measures the distance to the ground thousands of times per second as it scans a swath below the aircraft. With each measurement we record the orientation of the platform, beam angle and inertial flight parameters. We synchronize these measurements with the GPS clock to provide microsecond accuracy. Post processing of the GPS real-time data and normalization of the data set produces a three dimensional 'point-cloud' of measured points in the data set. Typical parameters result in a DEM (Digital Elevation Model) with centimetre accuracy.
